Summer Internships 2019 : Learn (and earn) by Doing

Duration: 10 weeks

Compensation: $16/hr

Role/Responsibilities/Duties: May differ based on the internship experience.

Student Qualifications: Second year/Sophomore standing and above.
A background check will be conducted on all selected candidates. Must be able to work full-time 40hrs/week.

Information Security Services

Security Analyst

Position Description

The Security Analyst will develop and maintain information security services and operations. Primary activities include assisting in the development of annual programs to enhance information security awareness for faculty/staff/students and the security of the Cal Poly network. Assist with daily operational monitoring of security vulnerability, events, and incidents; performing risk assessments; and collaborating with functional and technical staff to identify and document security requirements. 

Responsibilities

Under general staff supervision, duties include:

  • Work with marketing and communications team to develop a comprehensive National Cyber Security Awareness Month program. 
  • Transition third-party vendor data from old tracking system into an off-the-shelf application. 
  • Develop Automation and Response scripts to aid the security team in protecting the campus network and data.
  • Assist with campus security risk assessments through data analysis.
  • Analyze current logging to determine potential patterns to help identify malicious activity.
  • Help develop tools/scripts/queries to look for certain anomalous behavior on the network. 
  • Create documentation/run-books for SOC activities. 

Student Qualifications

  • Third year or (Junior) standing and above.
  • Computer Science, Business, or other related majors. 
  • Coursework in data analysis (e.g., Statistics).

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Working towards a computer science degree or related field  
  • Demonstrated experience using a common scripting language (e.g., Perl, Python, php). 
  • Ability to work with technical and non-technical staff to identify requirements and translate them into technology-based solutions. 
  •  Ability to use creative problem-solving skills and apply effective technical solutions.  
  •  Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to set priorities 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Infrastructure & Platform Services

Videographer

Position Description

The primary role is to create two videos, one under 3 minutes (trailer/synopsis video) and one 15 minute video of on-going ITS summer projects which include projects related to a variety of ITS services, which will also include other summer intern projects, classroom technology upgrades, and other projects.  . 

Responsibilities

Under general staff supervision, duties include:

  • Pre-Production:  Gather requirements for project processes and video specifications for approval by ITS.  Work with ITS’s communication specialist to help schedule one-on-one interviews with staff.  Work with various ITS staff to plan the video documentation process for 5 to 6 selected projects. 
  • Production:  Record video using DSLR’s, GoPro, and a 360 Camera.  Audio can be captured with the cameras or external mics and recorders. 
  • Post-Production:  Edit video using Adobe premiere and any other equivalent software tools available to create a polished video.
  • Documentation:  All processes, documents, and file locations must be documented in ITS’s wiki (Atlassian Confluence). 
  • Presentation:  Create and present the final videos to ITS and discuss what you learned over the summer and relate it to your education.
  • Following agile-based project management methodologies  
  • Other duties as related to video production.

Student Qualifications

  • Third year or (Junior) standing and above.
  • Graphic Communication-related major. 

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Videography.
  • Knowledge of video editing tools such as Adobe Premiere. 
  • Work with a flexible (when in production) and fixed schedule both in time and location to meet the short 10-week deadline. 
  •  Flexibility with a potentially changing video production scope based on approvals and schedules.  
  •  Ability to climb a ladder as needed and work in a variety of environments.

Classroom Design

Position Description

The primary role is to create detailed 3D As-Builts of 129 of Cal Poly’s University Scheduled classrooms based on previously developed Revit files.  The roles are intended to provide more hands-on experience with Revit, developing Revit families, and exposure to agile project management methodologies.  The final product will result in a library of files that Cal Poly will use to help plan and determine how to upgrade classroom technology in the future and potentially be used in Augmented Reality / Virtual reality presentations. 


Responsibilities

Under general staff supervision, duties include

  • Data Collection: Take additional measurements and document locations of components within classrooms:  projector, projector screen, Instructor desk, fire alarms, wireless access points, fixed furniture, mobile furniture, mounts, monitors, AV user interfaces, AV racks, cameras, motion sensors, lights, light switches, thermostats, data ports and AC outlets.  
  • Research: Search and Find existing 3D objects via websites such as BIMObjects.com or various manufacturer websites. Coordinate with other team members to create a Revit family repository via Microsoft’s OneDrive.  
  • Creation:  Create 3D objects if they do not exist and appropriately place them into Revit files reflecting real-world positioning.  
  • Documentation:  All processes, documents, and file locations must be documented in the ITS wiki (Atlassian Confluence).  This includes documenting the NSEW orientation of classrooms.
  • Following agile-based project management methodologies. 
  • Other duties as related to documenting and detailing classroom equipment. 

Student Qualifications

  • Third year or (Junior) standing and above.
  • Construction Management or Architecture-related major 

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Some knowledge of Revit.  
  • Some knowledge of 3D Modeling. 
  • Some knowledge of laser range finders and other measurement tools. 
  • Ability to climb a ladder

Penetration Testing

Position Description

The Primary role is to Create new scripts that test for vulnerabilities including penetration testing and risk assessment.  

Responsibilities

Under general staff supervision, duties include:

  • Train staff and personnel on best practices for network security. 
  • Set up security policies that help personnel use best practices for digital protection. 
  • Perform risk assessment across the entire network.
  • Develop low-level tools that improve security testing and monitoring  
  • Deliver detailed reports to different team members that document security findings.

Student Qualifications

  • Second year or (Sophomore) standing and above.
  • Computer Science, Graphic Communication, or other related majors. 

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Understanding of network protocols.
  • Technical skills in both information security architecture and penetration testing. 
  • Scripting and programming. 
  •  Excellent report writing and presentation skills.  
  •  Proficiency in at least one programming language, multiple preferred.
  • Flexibility to change direction and manage conflicting demands.
  •  Technical writing.
  • Proficiency in multiple Operating Systems

Position Description

The Primary role is to oversee marketing projects.

Responsibilities

Under general staff supervision, duties include

  • Oversee a small marketing team to ensure consistent, informative and appealing content.  
  • Ensure the website stays up to date with relevant events and information.  
  • Ensure that all visual and written content is consistent, high quality, and meets deadlines for publishing.  
  • Implement SEO best practices, research keywords to keep search results relevant.
  • Work as the POC with all outside marketing contacts to ensure they get all of the information needed to adequately advertise the CCI . 
  • Work with marketing team to analyze metrics and constantly improve content. 

Student Qualifications

  • Second year or (Sophomore) standing and above.
  • Computer Science, Graphic Communication, or other related majors

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Effective communicator both verbally and written.  
  • Experience in communications and/or marketing. 
  • Knowledge of social media best practices across all major platforms. 
  • Background in SEO and general metrics analytics.
  • Baseline knowledge or better of social media marketing tools such as Hootsuite.
  • Knowledge of visual media creation tools, especially in the Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Ability to work with others to produce high quality work .
  • Flexibility to change direction and manage conflicting demand.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, startup work environment .
